China's AI Consumption Push Makes Smart Devices A Privacy And Repair Test
China's AI-consumption measures widen the market for smart devices and services, while putting data collection, security updates and repairability in the consumer spotlight.

China is encouraging broader AI use across devices, retail, tourism, home services and care. The policy creates a runway for companies that can put useful intelligence into everyday products. It also creates a harder product question: whether a device remains trustworthy after the sales pitch, when it is collecting data in a home, processing a payment or waiting for its next security update.
Products touching health, payments or children cannot be treated as ordinary recommendation engines. Users need clear information about what is recorded, where it is stored and how it can be deleted. Devices also need a credible update path, an offline failure mode and a way to be reset or repaired after ownership changes.
Hardware shipments can rise quickly on a policy or retail cycle; durable value depends on support costs, warranty claims, cloud inference bills and customer retention. The companies that make AI devices normal will be the ones that treat privacy, repair and security as product features rather than paperwork.
