OpenAI's Unlimited Free Chats Make Reliability The New Consumer Upsell
OpenAI is removing text-chat limits for free ChatGPT users and introducing GPT-5.6 Luna, placing more of the competitive pressure on response quality, feature limits and the cost of serving a billion-user product.

OpenAI says it will remove limits on text chats for ChatGPT users on its free tier, an expansion built around GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go accounts. The move makes the everyday text conversation a less obvious point of differentiation, while preserving separate limits for files, images, voice and image generation.
The product decision arrives as OpenAI says ChatGPT has passed one billion weekly users. At that scale, a free-tier policy is also an infrastructure policy. Each broader allowance has to be balanced against the capacity required to deliver fast, reliable answers when demand peaks.
OpenAI also says paid users will receive an updated GPT-5.6 Sol and a thinking slider that lets them choose more reasoning effort for harder questions. That creates a clearer division between a widely available conversational product and premium controls for complex work.
The company cited internal evaluations showing fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5 variants. Such results are useful signals, not a substitute for independent testing in the situations where people will rely on the product. The most important measure is whether a user can tell when the system is uncertain and check consequential claims.
Free access can make an AI product familiar to far more people. The commercial challenge is to make the paid tier feel valuable through trust, control and useful capabilities rather than by simply putting a tollbooth in front of basic conversation.
