Spotify will label certain AI-generated artist identities as AI Personas and exclude their music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. The policy does not ban the tracks. Instead, it focuses on whether an artist profile represents a real human and gives listeners a clearer signal before they choose what to hear.

The choice to limit recommendations is the consequential part. Discovery systems decide which music reaches listeners who did not seek it out. By keeping labeled personas out of those systems unless a person explicitly follows them, Spotify is drawing a line between allowing creative experimentation and using platform distribution to amplify synthetic identities.

Spotify says it will accept self-disclosure but will not rely on it alone. The company plans to review profiles whose names and imagery appear to present photorealistic AI-generated identities, starting with profiles that meet defined audience thresholds. Artists will also have an appeal route if a label is applied incorrectly.

That is a more precise policy than trying to determine whether every note in every song was made with AI. Artists use tools across a spectrum. Spotify says the persona badge concerns public identity, while separate features such as AI Credits and SongDNA are intended to describe how a track was made.

The policy will succeed only if the labels are accurate and the recommendation rules are consistently enforced. But it offers a practical model for platforms facing synthetic media: explain what the audience is seeing, then be honest about how the distribution system will treat it.
