Google Introduces Sponsored Ads in AI Mode — The Search Giant Begins Monetising Its AI Pivot

Google has begun displaying sponsored advertisements within AI Mode — its AI-generated search experience that provides conversational answers to queries rather than traditional blue links. The ads, clearly labelled 'Sponsored,' appear as contextually relevant suggestions within the AI-generated response, marking the first step in Google's plan to monetise what it has described as the most significant evolution of Search in its history.
The introduction of ads into AI Mode has been anticipated since Google launched the feature at Google I/O 2025, but the timing and format have been closely watched by advertisers, publishers, and investors. Google's advertising revenue — which accounts for approximately 77% of Alphabet's total revenue — depends on maintaining advertiser spend as search behaviour shifts from keyword queries to conversational AI interactions. The sponsored ad format in AI Mode is designed to preserve that revenue stream while adapting to the new interaction model.

Early reports from advertisers suggest that click-through rates on AI Mode sponsored ads are lower than traditional search ads, but that conversion rates — the proportion of clicks that result in a purchase or sign-up — are higher. The hypothesis is that AI Mode users are further along in their decision-making process when they click an ad, having already received a comprehensive answer to their query. If that pattern holds at scale, AI Mode ads could generate more revenue per impression than traditional search ads, even with lower click-through rates.
Publishers are watching the development with concern. AI Mode's conversational answers reduce the need for users to click through to source websites, which has already contributed to declining referral traffic across the web. The introduction of ads within those answers means Google is now monetising the attention that previously flowed to publisher websites. The long-term implications for the web's content economy remain deeply uncertain.
