Google's Gemini Spark Launches for AI Ultra Subscribers — A 24/7 Personal AI Agent

Google's Gemini Spark, the 24/7 personal AI agent announced at Google I/O 2026 on May 19, has launched this week for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. The service is priced at $100 per month — significantly above Google's standard Gemini Advanced tier — and provides a persistent AI agent that monitors and acts on the user's behalf across Google's suite of productivity tools.

Unlike standard AI assistants that respond to queries, Gemini Spark operates proactively. It monitors the user's Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and Google Tasks continuously, identifying items that require attention and taking action — drafting responses, scheduling meetings, summarising documents, flagging deadlines — without being explicitly asked. The agent can be configured with preferences and constraints through a natural language setup process, and users can review and approve actions before they are executed.

The $100 monthly price point positions Gemini Spark as a premium productivity tool rather than a consumer product. For comparison, OpenAI's ChatGPT Pro is $200 per month, Anthropic's Claude Max is $100 per month, and Microsoft's Copilot Pro is $30 per month. Google is betting that Spark's deep integration with its productivity suite — and the proactive, always-on nature of the agent — justifies the premium over Copilot Pro, which operates reactively rather than proactively.

Early user reports highlight both the capability and the discomfort of a truly proactive AI agent. Several users have described the experience as 'uncanny' — the agent anticipates needs before they are articulated, which is useful but also raises questions about the degree to which a persistent AI agent that reads all your email and monitors your calendar constitutes a meaningful privacy trade-off. Google's privacy documentation for Gemini Spark states that agent actions are processed on Google's servers and subject to the company's standard privacy policy, which permits use of data to improve Google's products.

The launch is significant for the broader AI agent market. Google's distribution — over 3 billion Gmail users, 2 billion Google Drive users — means Gemini Spark has an addressable market that no standalone AI agent startup can match. If the product achieves meaningful adoption among its initial AI Ultra subscriber base, it will accelerate the normalisation of proactive AI agents as a standard productivity tool, and put pressure on Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI to offer comparable capabilities at competitive price points.
