Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI in Business AI Adoption for First Time

For the first time since the enterprise AI market took shape, Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in business adoption. The Ramp AI Index, which tracks AI spending across thousands of companies using the Ramp corporate card platform, shows Claude at 34.4% enterprise market share compared to OpenAI's 32.3% as of May 2026. The shift, which accelerated sharply in the first quarter of this year, marks a significant inflection point in the competitive dynamics of the AI industry.

The Claude Code Effect

The primary driver of Anthropic's ascent is Claude Code, the AI coding assistant that has become the dominant tool in professional software development environments. Launched in late 2025, Claude Code integrates directly into development workflows and has been adopted by engineering teams at companies ranging from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 enterprises. Its ability to handle complex, multi-file codebases and maintain context across long development sessions has distinguished it from competing products.

Enterprise AI adoption has shifted dramatically in 2026, with coding tools driving the majority of new deployments.

According to Ramp's data, software and technology companies account for the largest share of Claude's enterprise adoption, but the tool has also penetrated financial services, healthcare, and professional services firms that employ large engineering teams. The pattern suggests that wherever there is significant software development activity, Claude Code has become the default choice.

Claude Code has fundamentally changed how our engineering team operates. We have moved from using AI as a suggestion engine to using it as a genuine collaborator on complex problems.

OpenAI's Response

OpenAI has not ceded the market without a fight. The company launched its own enhanced coding product in March 2026 and has been aggressively expanding its enterprise sales team. GPT-5.5 Instant, released in April, demonstrated significant improvements in code generation benchmarks. But the Ramp data suggests that enterprise switching costs and workflow integration have given Claude Code a durable advantage that is difficult to dislodge quickly.

OpenAI retains dominant share in consumer applications and in the API market for companies building AI-native products. The enterprise productivity market, however, is increasingly Anthropic's territory. The two companies are competing on different terrain, and both are growing rapidly in absolute terms even as their relative positions shift.

Three Threats to Anthropic's Lead

Despite the milestone, Anthropic faces three structural threats that could erode its position. First, Google's Gemini Ultra is being bundled into Google Workspace at no additional cost, giving it a distribution advantage that Anthropic cannot easily match. Second, Microsoft's Copilot is deeply integrated into the Office 365 ecosystem, creating switching costs for enterprises already committed to the Microsoft stack. Third, the open-source ecosystem is maturing rapidly, with Meta's Llama 4 and other models enabling enterprises to deploy capable AI without vendor dependency.

The Ramp data captures spending, not usage, which means it reflects enterprise purchasing decisions rather than the full picture of AI deployment. Companies that have negotiated enterprise agreements with OpenAI or Google may be using those products extensively without appearing in Ramp's transaction data. The market share figures should be read as an indicator of momentum rather than a definitive ranking.

What is clear is that the enterprise AI market is more competitive than it has ever been, and the outcome is far from settled. Anthropic's achievement in overtaking OpenAI in business adoption is a significant milestone, but the three threats it faces are real and the lead is measured in percentage points, not market dominance. The next twelve months will determine whether this is a durable shift or a temporary inflection.
